It's really going to depend on how they approach it. Is it going to be an adventure worthy of the series, or is it going to be a big Hollywood reunion movie? Most sequels begin to pale not because they've run out of story ideas*, but because everyone involved gets so comfortable with the film. The characterizations established in previous efforts begin to get left behind, and in their place we get the actors' own personalities. It makes for an enjoyable popcorn movie, but ultimately winds up dating the film. Burt Reynolds learned this the hard way in the 80's. They need to consider, "Will an audience 10 years from now get these jokes? Will they understand why the character is doing this, or is it just something that this actor's fans will understand?"

I think Indy 4 should be able to stand on it's own. If they start trying to include past characters simply because they feel the audience will expect them, then they might start doing so at the expense of the story. Then there's the other trap of feeling they need to add more characters, in additon to the returning ones, in order to justify another sequel. I hope Indy 4 avoids these mistakes and manages to keep the pace of Raiders in the process.

*Alluding to the fact that people think we've gotten clever enough as a society, to exhaust a character's storytelling potential with a single story.
