I'd read them in order in which they were written. The Hobbit, then The Lord of the Rings trilogy, then The Silmarillion.

Then, after you've read The Silmarillion, read The Lord of the Rings again... it'll be different! Reading Tolkien's final book makes all the difference, and you'll see things in the Trilogy that you were never able to notice before.

PS It's not necessary to read The Hobbit--the book is just more of a fun story that Tolkien wrote for his children. You can jump right into Fellowship of the Ring... but you'll be missing a lot of fun. :)
