I think that the Hobbit should be read first, as it sets the stage for the Lord of the Rings.
Then the Lord of the Rings falls next.

In the Silmarillion, though, you'll find 5 different stories.
There are the first 2, "Ainulindale" and "Valaquenta" which are early historical preface to everything; they could be read at any point.
Then there are the last two stories, "Akallabeth" and "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age", which are almost summations with insight; I'd read them after the Lord of the Rings.
Then lastly, I'd read the Quenta Silmarillion, proper.

IMHO, YMMV.
