A Sallah question...

When Indy and Marion are locked in the Well of Souls we see Sallah as a prisoner of the Nazis. The next time we see him is when he delivers the line, "I'm so pleased you're not dead." In real time an hour or so has passed. Indy and Marion escaped form the Well and blew up the Flying Wing.
My question is where was Sallah during that time? Shouldn't he have hightailed it back to the Well of Souls as soon as he got away from the Nazis and tried to rescue his friends? He seems to have given them up for dead the minute the lid was closed.

Speculation???
