Friday the 13th has been considered unlucky since Medieval times in Masonic tradition because it was Friday, 13 October, 1314 that the Knights Templar were arrested and the Inqusition started torturing them to get confessions.
An older reason to consider it unlucky can be found in the Book of the Exodus. The Passover would have been the equivalent of Friday the 13th. It happened, by the Jewish calendar, on the 14th of the month, and it was the seventh day (Saturday). But the Jewish day starts at 6:00 in the evening (which means "beginning"). So, to the Egyptians, it was late in the day on Friday... the 13th... that the Angel of Death passed over Egypt, killing the firstborn of every household that did not have the proper markings.
