Actually, I have given this a lot of thought, and I think George Clooney would be perfect for the role.
Although Batman & Robin did not show him in his best light, he is one of the few actors who can play "understated" well.
Check him out in The Peacemaker, and then get back to me.
Another actor who I think could carry the role, is Adrian Paul of tv's Highlander.
Neither of these guys are Ford clones, and I think that when an actor steps into a role like this, he needs to add his own unique talents to the part, while still keeping the essence of the original character.

Actually, I'm hoping that nobody offers Clooney the Jones role, because I'd love to see him as Nick Kismet in The Unrevealed Heart.
