That and the fact that the first "Superman" movie starts out with the words "June 1938", followed by the kid reading the comic who mentions the 1930's gave me the wrong impression. I guess they were just paying tribute to the comic in that part and not alluding to anything within the movie itself.

The movie begins on Planet Krypton about to explode and they send Superman to Earth. There was no kid reaading a comic book in that part of the movie.
