I saw that broadcast on CNN and I'm sure that spielberg had a period version of bogie in mind when he made the comment. That is to say he would have cast bogie if he were at an age when his most famous films were in circulation, the late forties (casablanca, the big sleep and the maltese falcon). looking almost all of spielbergs work, the forties must be his favourite period. I think the line said by John Goodman about the airfield in "Always" being like a USAF base in Britain during the second world war really typifies this.
