Although American audiences had trouble with Lazenby in the Bond role, the real reason he didn't come back, and ultimately Sean Connery was brought back for Diamonds Are Forever, has more to do with behind the scenes politics.
Lazenby did a fair job in front of the camera, but off screen he was such a demanding prima donna that no one wanted him back. In may ways that's a pity because Lazenby's Bond was almost exactly what Ian Fleming wrote and most Bond afficionadoes agree that On Her Majesty's Secret Service was one of the best Bond movies.
So really, the Bond parallel reinforces two very big points-- Another actor can successfully take over a role (ask Moore or Brosnan) and you have to keep making the movies. No one will forget James Bond, even though some of the movies are real turkeys. Why, because there are 18 and counting episodes, and that is a series run without equal in the movie biz.
WE NEED MORE INDY MOVIES!!!
