Indy's bag

Hi folks,

I received my MKVII gas mask bag last weekend. I really like it.
I'm only not so sure about changing the original strap, because it looks nice and it's quite comfortable. The problem is you can't take it of without damaging the strap or metall rings.
Does anybody know what the wheel-like thing on the side of the bag is for?
