Temple of Doom video game

I recently acquired the roms for temple of doom and have not been able to get to the end. Here's my problem: I get to the stage where you have to get the golden statue, well I get it then I can't figure out where to go, I inevitably get killed and then have to locate it again. My question is, do I absolutley need the statue to complete the stage? If I do, how do I complete the stage (where's the exit). Finally is there anyway to get rid of the prince who stuns you. Please email me or post an answer to this, it is getting really frustrating.
