: : I'm glad someone finally is addressing the leather treatment, as Wested has not been able to ship "leather groom." Recently I have been asking around about treatments, and it seems there are many companies making proprietary concoctions. One treatment seems to have more "name" credibility than others. David Morgan (the Indy whip maker) lists a "Pecards" leather treatment, which is claimed to be used in conservation (museum) practices as well as conditioning for an active whip. Though I have not used it yet, it sounds like a trustworthy source. Also, you may try other trustworthy shops (like LL Bean) who sell all sorts of great products including leather goods. I plan on trying several products to find what works best. Good luck.

: Pecard dressing is really just Vaseline with some added waxes. Museum's do prefer petroleum-based products, as the do not go rancid, like animal-based products such as mink oil. Save yourself some money, and get the same result - use a pure petroleum-based product like Vaseline. Avoid the generics unless your are certain they do not contain any additive scents or medications.

: Cheers!

Be mindful as to where you live regarding what "groom" you put on your leather goods, as in some locations, such as Florida, insects are drawn to leather products that are sealed in some petroleum products, and specifically products as the above mentioned mink oil. I have been on an extensive "research" project to find a product close to the groom Dale and I use that Peter sells. To date I have only come up with a possible substitute made by a company called "UG" out of Australia. With a name like that, I'm not sure I'd trust it (grins), and plan to visit several more locations that specialize in leather treatment around my area soon, so stay tuned. The quest is not done.
