Yes, there really were Thugees in India's past, but the guys in the movie act like Mayans.
For starters, the Thugee had a strict prohibition against shedding the blood of thier victims. They detested blood...

: Actually, according to some, the Thuggee's weren't copying anyone. The Thuggee cult was a real cult(Or so I'm told) but since it came from a few sources, I guess it's possible they were real. But Shorty rocks! I don't care about him being for the kids, I think he's the funniest little runt in the Indy movies. Especially theeee old:
