I don't know the motivation for the movie character but as far as real life, Indy's clothes are inspired, IMHO, by the outfit Charlton Heston wears in "Greatest Show On Earth." It's all there, the jacket, hat, pants and shirt and I read somewhere that this movie had a big impact on Steven Spielberg as it was the first movie he ever saw.

I think Indy would've picked up the idea for the bag from his working with other archeologists. The need for a bag to carry tools and artifacts would be a natural.
