I don't hate Shorty but I could live without him. He's not as annoying as Willie but I don't think he makes any real contribution to the film. To use the fight against the Maharajah as an example, I'd rather the scene evoked a sense of danger and excitement than laughter.
His character seems to have been put in to appeal to children and it's inappropriate since the rest of the film is so adult in nature. Why stick this childish element into a film that's too violent for children? Spielberg said at the time that he wouldn't let his own children watch "ToD" so why allow so much childishness into the film?
