I really hope they do go darker with Episode 2 and with Indy IV. Part of the problem with "Phantom Menace" is that it was so light and fluffy.
I think "Raiders" is the darkest of the Indy movies so far. Indy seems far more ruthless as do his enemies. "Temple of Doom" is gorier but it still has a lighter feel to me and "Last Crusade" is the lightest of them all.
