: I read somewhere that George Lucas' original name for the character was Indiana Smith and that they (thankfully) changed it to Jones. Can anyone verify this or was it a joke? "Indiana Smith" sounds horrible!

: : No, I am not new to the forum, or just saw Raiders for the first time in my life yesterday!! What I want to know, is that Indy is "named after his dog", right? Or at least, he adopts that name. Kappish? Well. "Indiana" is such a FABULOUS name, and I know it originally belonged to George Lucas' malamute, but HOW DID HE THINK OF THAT NAME? When I settle down with a Harrison Ford-look-alike and "raise 8 or 9 kids like my friend Sallah", the first one will be named.. BOB! (just kidding) "Indiana Jones Comstock-Skipp-Ford" will be my son's name, even if he curses me when he's a teenager for his LONG name having to be written on schoolwork. (I would know! :-) So: what's the history? It DOES sound FAR better than "Maine", "Oregon", "Florida", etc.
: : Any thoughts?

Regarding Indiana Smith, Lucas changed the name to keep it from being confused with McQueen's western "Nevada Smith", or have folks think it was a follow up type western movie. Regards. Michaelson
