This isn't exactly what you're looking for but if you can't find the book you mentioned then you might try a copy of the Army Survival Manuel. I saw it at Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago for eight dollars. It details how to build rafts and trap animals and purify water and anything else a person would need to learn to survive in any climate. It might be a little adult for your kids if they are very young but for a teenager it is quite appropriate and goes into a lot of detail. It's ideal for anyone who wants to teach their kids how to explore and survive in the wild.
