It was a partnership between Circuit City and a California Law firm to create a competing format to the DVD. Instead of buying a disc for $20 you buy a disc for $3 or $4. But the catch is, it only plays in a special DVD player with a modem in it that connects through the phone line to the company's computers. Once you start playing the disc you only have 48 hours to watch it as much as you want. After that, you will pay an additional viewing fee. Kind of a pay-per-view thing. It was a scheme to sell digital movies without really selling them, and for retailers like Circuit City to capture the $$$ in the rental market.
