: : I think I am going to go for the satin. I read the FAQ on Indy gear and the remark about it lasting longer sounds good to me. I expect I shall be buying another eventually anyway so I'll see how it goes.

: : Thanks for the advice.

: : My father is buying himself and me one for xmas and my girlfriend said she'd get me a Noel Howard shirt - kick ass!

: I have an A-2 that I purchased 15 years ago that has the exact same cotton lining that the Wested comes with. That A-2 lining is in as good a shape now as it was when purchased, and the jacket has been in constant use since purchase and is now in use by my youngest daughter. Based on the claim made that the "satin" lining will last three to four times as long as the cotton, that would mean that it should last (worse case scenario) for 45 years, best 60 years. Based on that math, I guess I'd go for the satin lining too. In my experience, I'll stick with the cotton. (grins) Regards. Michaelson

It is not just satin vs. cotton. David Hack doesn't offer a jacket with cotton lining. Also, he is using satin that is spec'ed for government contracting - the stuff is VERY heavy duty, as anybody owing a Cooper can attest. From what I've heard of the satin Peter uses, it is a bit lighter then that used in the Cooper, but is MUCH more comfortable against one's skin.

I've asked Peter MORE then once which was more durable. He says there is not difference in durability between the materials he uses, and that the choice is PURELY a matter of taste.

Personally, I prefer the cotton. It feels like you're wearing a comfortable old jean jacket. It breathes heat and humidity away from your body - though Peter has told me he disputes any REAL warmth difference between the two materials as well. We agreed to disagree, in that I was again comparing the heavier satin David Hack uses.

Back to the cotton - it does tend to grab shirts, especially if you are wearing a long sleeve cotton shirt. But I believe that once you pull the cuffs through, it really enhances the way the jacket drapes, or "hangs" on you.

Cheers!
