This scene has always bothered me a little. Even if we agree that Indy knew this from the Bible or from some other writings then how come Belloq doesn't know not to look at the Ark? He's every bit as knowledgable about the Ark as Indy is (maybe moreso). The Bible is clear about not touching the Ark and yet Belloq reaches in and removes some of the contents (that's gotta be a no no) so maybe he knew about not looking and just decided to ignore the warning.
But also if you look closely at the film Indy is too late in warning Marion about closing her eyes. They've both already seen the spirits flying around so it's really too late for them to not look on the power of the Ark.
I agree that it's all just a plot device so that Indy and Marion will survive the end of the movie.
