Why does bellock eat a fly?

I finally found the fly that crawls into his mouth during the "blow up the ark scene." WHY OH WHY DID HE LET THAT HAPPEN? Or maybe the fly really didn't crawl into his mouth although it sure looks like it.
But what disturbs me about this is the fact that he lets it happen. Why didn't he go "ptooey ptooey" then just reshoot the scene; he must be a dedicated actor!

"Too much to drink, Dr. Jones HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHSHAHAHH"
