First of all I don't think he ate it. Second of all, it just must be a common thing for flies to buzz around people in Tunisia. It's probably hard to avoid. Third of all, I think it adds a touch of realism to the picture. It was probably not even noticed during the filming but for some reason looks really gross on the big screen! Anyway I think it's one of those funny things to just enjoy about the movie.
