The only thing that really makes them orthopedic is the steel shank. Heavy duty boots used to all be made that way - at least the good ones. The shank adds a degree of support that I really notice. Ever noticed how much support you get from a brand new pair of running shoes? That support only lasts for a few months. By that time, they are just another pair of sneakers. The #405's support lasts. They are built like a tank - and weigh as much as one. You'll never put anything better on your feet, though.
