I think the main reason why Temple of Doom fails to please many people is that Spielberg (or whoever) never decided what type of movie it should be. On one hand it's one of these "kid empowerment" movies like Home Alone, where the kid can beat up the bad guys, yet the child slavery and ripping-out-of-hearts crosses the line for "wholesome" kid entertainment. So on some level you alienate older viewers by giving kids hard-to-believe abilities like Shorty's flying karate moves on the Thuggees, and you freak out the kids with the Mola-Ram-Shumbedum (sp?).
