Should I buy the widescreen versions?

I am debating whether or not to buy the widescreen versions. I currently own Jaws and Close Encounters that were mastered in THX format and they seem to be blurry or washed out. I am viewing them on a 27" Sony Trinitron and a Yamaha 6-head HI-FI Stereo VCR.
