'Raiders' video trouble...

Hi:
Like most of you I purchased the widescreen set yesterday ($31 Canadian - not bad) and started to watch 'Raiders.' I noticed that the sound on the tape wasn't very good at all. I'd just cleaned the VCR and despite my attempts at adjusting the tracking I still could only get sound out of my centre speaker. Nothing from the front or rears, just centre. I was pretty upset so I popped the others in and they sounded just fine. Has anyone else noticed this or is my set damaged? The guy at the video store REALLY ran the set over the de-magnetization scanner.
The funny thing is I have the older set and the laser discs and they all sound better (Raiders anyway) so I don't know if I have a dud or not.
Please help by letting me know if any of you have experienced this!!!
