Actually, Last Crusade has always been my favorite of the three.

Yes, Last Crusade has many elements that parallel Raiders, but much of that formula is also integral to Indy. As in Raiders he's picking up where his mentor/father, the real specialist, left off. Indy himself is not a specialist in any one area, like Ravenwood or his father, because he spends too much time out in the field adventuring. His main livlihood consists of recovering artifacts for the museum (in return for honorariums and glory of course).

That said, there's really no point in quibbling over minor plot details because the basic plot in any hero story is already a given. In Shakespeare, for example, the plots are hardly ever very intricate or involved. The audience for the most part already knows what's going to happen. The skill is in the dialogue, the character development, and the sheer entertainment the play provides as we watch. And this is actually not so far-fetched a comparison (of Indy to Shakespeare) if you consider that the screenwriter for "Shakespeare in Love", Tom Stoppard, reworked the script for Last Crusade.

I like The Last Crusade the best because it is the richest of the three. Harrison Ford and Sean Connery's on-screen chemistry is incredible. The characters are the most fully-developed. And I love the fact that Last Crusade is the funniest of the three. It's a kind of winking acknowledgement that these movies are totally over-the-top and that that's why we love them. At the same time the humorous moments often help illustrate the very human side of Indy/Harrison Ford that allow us to indentify ourselves with him so well.

And I have never understood how anyone could have anything against Temple of Doom.
