: Yes, you can swim in water with oil on top of it, for example, sailors did this when their ships were sunk in WWII, and you can see pictures of them being rescued while coated with oil. However, it's not something you would do by choice and I wouldn't recommend it! I don't know how that scene was filmed but I doubt they actually put the actors in water with crude oil.
