Coincidence or just plain rip-off???

I was just watching The Mask Of Zorro today and there was this part where Antonio Banderas(aye caramba!) escaped from a church after stealing a horse. Since the horse was wild, it ran and got a head start. So far so good. Then, there was this small cliff and under the cliff the horse was grazing while Antonio was still left on top. He starts calling out to the horse but the horse wouldn't budge. So, he gave out a whistle and voila, the horse moves near the cliff so that he could jump on it. But when Antonio jumoed, the horse took a step forward leaving poor Antonio landing on the hard ground. Seem familiar? Then, he jumps onto the horse just like how River Phoenix did in LC. Anyone got any explaination?
