Definitely. What was so great about Ford was that he brought a vulnerability to the character by giving Indy real fears and weaknesses. This made him easy to identify with, as opposed to an indestructable fearless super-hero.

"Snakes...Why did it have to be snakes?"

It also allowed for more humor!
