Another map room observation...

The earlier post about the sun's position in the map room brings up a question. Okay, we know that Indy used his notes and the hieroglyphics on the floor to determine which hole to put the staff into so that the sun would beam through to the right place. The info on the back of the headpiece tells only how high the staff must be (and also warns not to disturb the Ark). There are hundreds of holes in the floor that the staff can be placed in depending on the time of year and maybe even a different hole for each day of the year. But since Belloq was just there making his measurements a day or two earlier how come the hieroglyphics are covered with dust as though they haven't been disturbed in hundreds of years? Shouldn't Belloq have used the same hole that Indy used or at least one very close to it? Wouldn't Belloq have made his calculations for the placement of the staff by reading the same hieroglyphics that Indy read? If Belloq covered over the hieroglyphics with sand so that Indy wouldn't know where to place the staff then why would he leave his measuring tape on the floor and mark the building that he believed to be the Well of Souls?

Anyone care to speculate?
