I read the adapted novels from the Young Indy Chronicles and it said that he changed his name when he wanted to join the Belgian army but he had to be Belgian(Correct so far?) So he had to change his name. The first thing he saw was a French no-smoking sign and therefore, his name became Henri DeFense. :)
