You've gotta love those people who construe any criticism -- no matter how sound -- as "bashing." Lucas, Spielberg, Ford, and Kasdan each have certain strengths and weaknesses that they bring to Indy. Obviously, if the films had not been such a cooperative effort we would not have had Indy as we know him. Lucas's strong point is his general vision and his eye for the look of a film should have (Spielberg has said that Lucas knew almost from the beginning what Indy should look like). Spielberg is a great story-teller (but not a creator like Lucas). But Kasdan gave depth to Lucas's flat characters and tightened as well as added complexity to Lucas's loose story outline (as well as downplaying that silly playboy-Indy idea). And Ford turned Indy into the hero that we all know and love -- and want to be (see Indygear).

No one can deny that without Lucas we would not have had Indy. Yet it is almost equally without doubt that if Lucas had been the only influence on Indy's development we would have had an Indy with all the complexity of Han Solo. Not that Han Solo isn't my favorite character from Star Wars. But he's no Indiana Jones.
