You only explode if you hit one of the walls on the way down, or you are moving too fast. Move towards the edge slowly until you are hanging over the edge. Stop moving forward and let your momentum carry you over. If you don't hit the side, you fall down without blowing up. Unfortunetly there's not much to do down there.
