Some questions on LC

I know I'm the probably the worst Indy fan so please help this girl here.

1. What did the Roman numerals in the church have to do with the second marker?

2. How did Indy know that his father was looking for the shield itself and not a book on it?

3. How come Henry Jones, Sr. who was captured by that brotherhood protecting the Grail was in the Brunwald Castle with the Nazis when the Nazis were looking for the Grail also? Means the brotherhood made a pact with the Nazis?
