Yes and no.
$5K is a lot by 1936, economic recession in full swing, US dollars. However, the antiquities trade has always been big business. If Indy had offered $300, Marion probably would have hit him again. Air travel was ridiculously expensive, and as Marion said, "That'll get me back, but not in style."
Five grand would have set her up for a few years, but a lot of that money would already be gone by the time she set foot on Amerian soil.

As to the value of the headpiece, art and artifact collectors (like the ubiquitious Mr. Donovan of LC) paid a lot to own rare antiquities, especially since most of these came through illegal channels. Both the Army and the Nazis, knowing the importance of the Headpiece to finding the Ark, would certainly have been willing to ante up.

What I really want to know is how Toht was able to get that poker red hot in fifteen seconds? Did he have a pocket bellows or something?
