Distressing a Wested

I have decided to distress my wested and know to use the suggested 500 grit sandpaper, but how and where do i start? Starting with the seams seems reasonable, but should it be stopped there or should i do a light rubbing across all of the jacket? Some advice would be helpful, thank you.
