Well, I love dogs and don't like to see them get eaten, but I did kind of like that scene for the very reason it was put in there: In disaster movies, there is always a dog who miraculously survives even when hundreds of humans don't. (Think Dante's Peak, ID4, off the top of my head.) I remember one critic reviewing Dante's Peak wishing that just once, the dog would get it. And that's what Spielberg did. He was making fun of a disaster movie convention, or cliche. And if you look at it that way, it's funny.
