Because:

a) You can only swing across very small chasms with a baseball bat.
b) A bat won't scare away a lion.
c) If he tried throwing his bat at Willie at the end of TOD, it would have been a very different ending (funnier, but very different).

And finally...

d) Because he's Indiana Jones.
