Spielberg had big hits with Jaws and Close Encounters. Then, his next film called 1942 was the biggest flop in Hollywood history at that time. It lost more than $ 50 million, which was a huge some of money in 1979. After that film, no studio would touch any film associated with Spielberg. Spielberg was begging the studios to make a little film called E.T., but everybody turned him down.

As a result, Spielberg begged Lucas to let him direct the sequel to Star Wars, but Lucas turned him down. Lucas said he had an idea about an adventurous archaeologist that would be perfect for Spielberg's directing skills.

Michael Eisner (who was the head of Paramount Studios back then, but now he runs Disney) was begging Lucas for a movie. Lucas called Eisner and told him about Indiana Jones. Eisner immediately said: "YES!" However, Lucas told Eisner that he would not be able to direct and wanted Spielberg as director. At first, Eisner was scared that Spielberg would produce another 1942. But Lucas told Eisner that he would personally oversee the picture. The rest is history.
