The “canned scream” has a name - Ben Burtt calls it the “Wilhelm”, after the person who initially provided it for an old movie Burtt saw. Burtt first used it in the original “Star Wars” (for the stormtrooper who after being shot in the Death Star chasm plummets to his death), and subsequently used it several Lucasfilm productions as his “signature”, including all the other Star Wars films, all the Indiana Jones features and several episodes of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Willow, and More American Graffiti. And yes, it has also surfaced elsewhere - I seem to remember hearing the Wilhelm in “Batman Returns”, among others.
