They wanted to get River Phoenix for YIJC but Phoenix's career was skyrocketing at the time and he couldn't commit to the long shooting schedule of the TV show. Apparently, ABC was really excited over a Young Indy series with Phoenix taking the lead, but settled for Sean Patrick Flanery (who did an excellent job). Sadly, Phoenix died October 31, 1993 of a drug overdose, I believe.

: While watching TLC in widescreen the thought occurred to me that if River Phoenix had not had an early demise, he would have been the perfect actor to play Indy in future films. Think about it, we already know him as Indy, albeit a young Indy. Then if Ford just didn't want to do anymore, Phoenix could have stepped up to bat. From the acting he did in TLC, it is evident that he had the character down better than the fellow in YIJC. It's a shame he's not around to do it. Regards, Steve
