Although River Phoenix did a good job as young Indy, I don't think he would've been the right actor to take over the reins for Harrison Ford.
First, toward the end, drugs were starting to make an impact on his acting ability. If you saw the awful job he did in "The Thing Called Love" then you know what I mean.
Second, I just don't see him physically as Indiana Jones. He might be able to pull off the facial part but his body was just too reedy. He wasn't beefy enough to believably carry off the action scenes.
