I guess it's all relative. Even as patriotic as the WWII soldiers were, it was nothing compared to the interest that was shown in fighting the first World War. WWII actually had some of the same disillusionment that Vietnam vets are often criticized for, namely, they knew what men in the first war had gone through and weren't exactly eager for the same. Even WWI's patriotism (on all sides) quickly gave way to a sense of, "Well, this is bullshit!", as the soldiers got into the actual war. In fact, they were so sick of the war after only a few months, that the US troops stopped fighting and celebrated Christmas with the enemy! Still, WWII will always be remembered as our finest hour because there was a sense of completion. It was the one that we won, whereas the first one didn't tie up all the loose ends.

Lamont: Oh, you don't know nothin' about guns.
Fred: Who don't know about guns? Fred B. Sanford- World War I: Artillery!!
Lamont: 'B.' Sanford?!
Fred: That's right- 'Bullseye'!
Lamont: It was World War II: KP, and the B didn't stand for Bullseye...!
