SPF and character development

As much as I like the adventures of Young Indiana Jones, I've always had a slight problem with SPF's portrayal of Indiana. It's almost as if he didn't see River Phoenix in LC or seriously study Ford's characterization in the three films. SPF's Indy always seemed way too innocent and naive for not only being Indy, but someone who went through WWI! You would think that experience would give Indy an edge to his personality, but it never seems to develop with SPF.
With the adventures of Young Indiana Jones, you simply have adventures that are in the vein/genre of Indiana Jones; you really don't have the Indiana Jones character (or even a foreshadowing/development of) that we all know and love.
