Yup, there are a lot of weapons that appear in the movies(especially Raiders) that weren't around yet. But remember, Indy was supposed to be 1930s Science Fiction...remember that German with the mechanical Gun/Arm that never came to be? As far as things in the barrels go, I don't know- maybe they are blank adapters? I'll bet 99% of those MP-40s were either totally deactivated or were those nice Japanese non-firing replicas. In fact, the only scenes I remeber with a firing MP-40 are the bar scene with Marion and when the Arabs put the basket in the truck full of explosives, so they probably only had one that actually fired when they made the film.

I heard rumors of some Italian-made blank-only MP-40s out there, though I don't know if they are legal in the USA or not...
