I haven't noticed anyone backpedalling lately (except for that one article in some magazine that seemed to be close to the opposite of what he'd said just a few months ago while promoting "Random Hearts"). Spielberg was on Larry King just last week and said the same thing he's said for quite some time: he wants to do it (if they can get their schedules straight before everyone gets too old). Have I missed something?

Also, I disagree about the effect of hype on "The Phantom Menace". It wasn't the primary reason that the movie was successful (if anything, some say the newsreports of people lining up may have scared some people away). After the first week, hype doesn't get movies very far. It didn't help mega-hyped movies like "Godzilla" or "Wild Wild West". Both disappeared soon after opening week. "The Phantom Menace", though, kept on doing well long after it opened.
