Why do people collect impractical Indy gear?

I can understand wanting the jacket, the shirt, etc., and even the fedora. These are all things you can use -- and, with the exception perhaps of the fedora, pieces of clothing you can rather surrepticiously work into everyday wear. But what are you going to do with the whip? or the holster? or a gun?!

Is there anyone who walks around in full uniform in broad daylight? Are these items for dress-up at home? Or just equipment to have on hand in case you ever get the call?

On second thought, I guess I'm just as guilty as anybody else. I just convince myself that my MVII bag and leather strap is a "useful" item -- when it's really just one more thing that gets me slightly closer to that fictional hero that has caught our imaginations -- and our pocketbooks.
