This may have been mentioned before but Scientific American has launched a new archaeology magazine this month with none other than Indy on the cover (from a Temple of Doom still). The important thing I noticed was how the discussion below from Bryce King concerning his anthropology professor's negative reaction to Indiana Jones was related to the negativity to the feature article in this new magazine. The article discusses how archaeology/anthropology today has advanced way beyond the image portrayed by Indiana Jones. What used to be perceived as "gentleman's search for fame and fortune" has now evolved into the high-tech science of recovery and analysis. Even so, I found throughout the article that the lure of treasure and adventure were not entirely extinguished among today's archaeologists. In fact, for some, it was what started them down the path. A brief article but interesting read nonetheless. The magazine's format itself is fairly interesting as it tries to open a window for lay people (non-archaeologists) by describing historical and current recovery efforts in a simple, straightforward language. -MP
